“Nosegrab” by Michael Whiting

Stainless Steel, 2010
Martha Lake Airport Park
Lynnwood, WA

Michael Whiting, is using artwork to tie in the act of skateboarding - to the act of flying with his site specific figure, Nosegrab.  This sculpture of a  “pixilated” skateboarder in flight doing a big aerial maneuver is in reference to the parks history of flight that will speak to the teen demographic at the new skate park.  The figurative shape is abstracted through a minimal use of pixels as seen in early video games.

Michael Whiting graduated from Brigham Young University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture. He then completed a master's degree at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, in 2002.  Whiting has a unique and fun style of creating "pixelated" sculptures that are large and colorful and combine the minimalism movement from the 1960s and the popular video games from history.
